Preparation for Tokyo Olympics

Delhi, July 27 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Col. Sports1Rajyavardhan Rathore has said that Government has been implementing through Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs) for high level support to the national teams at Senior, Junior and Sub-junior levels. State-of-the-Art indigenous as well as imported sports equipments are procured under the Scheme to enhance the performance of sportspersons. The Scheme covers various aspects of training of elite sportspersons including their boarding/ lodging, supplements, travel, participation in international competitions, equipments etc. There is no separate allocation for equipments. These are purchased as per the requirements of sportspersons as indicated by the National Sports Federations. 11 Regional Centres, 10 National Sports Academies, 05 Regional Sports Academies and 02 Academic Institutes of SAI are equipped with modern training facilities and have equipments which are being upgraded to international standards as per requirement.

 In a written reply in Lok Sabha today, the Minister said that the expenditure on these equipments is met from the grant received by SAI from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Rs. 32.80 crore have been spent by SAI during the last three years for this purpose.

            He said in addition to the Scheme of Assistance to NSFs, the Government has made provision for state-of-the-art sports equipments for the individual athletes identified as probable for Tokyo Olympics 2020 from the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme through which 132 sportspersons have been provided financial assistance for tailor made state-of-the-art equipments costing Rs. 1.10 crore since November, 2017.
