Awareness against Drugs &  Cancer Screening Camps will be focus areas of Rotary-Gurjeet Sekhon

Gurjeet Singh Sekhon has taken over as District Governor today of District 3070 which constitutes entire Jammu & Kashmir, large parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh for two years period which starts one year in advance for extensive training in India and abroad before taking over. After taking over as Distt. Governer Mr. Gurjeet Sekhon held a Press conference to explain the future plans of 2014-15.

Mr. Sekhon said that Rotary has 534 districts worldwide and brings together a global network of volunteer leaders who dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members from more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work impacts lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need.PPN010716

Mr. Sekhon said that   Eradication of Polio in India and rest of the world minus Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria is a land mark achievement of Rotarians who initiated this program in 1984¬85 and raised $ 1.2 billion from their own resources. This year we plan to raise another $ 500 million to eradicate Polio from the entire world as we cannot afford to have even one fresh case as it can spread to other parts of the world.

Rotary help the needy and poor by conducting open heart surgeries for children (0-18 years) totally free of cost. Last year 200 surgeries were done and this year we will double the number.

 

He said that Rotary has constructed 175 toilets in poor people’s home in the slums of Sultanwind area. This alone reduces drastically the sexual harassment of women and gives them dignity. In next one month we will build 150 more toilets. The money entirely raised by Rotarians from our district, Germany and USA. We plan to raise matching grants where our $ 1 becomes $ 4 through Rotary Foundation and do multiple projects in our district.

Rotary provides artificial limbs to handicapped people and this year we plan to reach out to far bigger numbers. Identifying and doing corrective cleft lip surgeries is on our agenda.

A mega health checkup for multiple medical disciplinary in remote area. Free medicines and surgeries will be given to the needy patients.

Awareness against drugs is one of the focus areas of Rotary and  addressing Schools and college students using Doctors and reformed addicts in Amritsar Distt..

The next acute problem is availability and purity of water. Techniques of rain water harvesting and providing clean drinking water to schools is our priority area.

To save the life of serious patients, Rotary is targeting to donate between 5000-7500 bottles of blood during the year.

Focus is on nurturing plants after planting them. We plant so many trees Every year but don’t nurture them. This year we are planning to save the plants and trees with  tree guards and starting a scheme to adopt trees.

Big cancer screening camps focusing on breast, cervical and stomach cancers is also planned by Rotary.

Creating awareness, sugar testing and for identified diabetics, counseling and eye checkup and treatment will be utmost importance of Rotary.

Sri Lanka has the highest percentage of eye donation population. Thus Rotary has  planned to educate and motivate people to donate eyes. The present in the press conference includes Past Governer’s Mr. Avinash Mahindru, Arun Kapoor, Upkar Singh Sethi, Past President Baldev Singh, Distt. Sectry. Adminstration Mr. Rajan Kapoor, S. Vikram Singh, Mrs. Amandeep Sekhon, Dr. Ravijit Singh Arora, J.S Kohli, Sanjay Malik and Mr. Ashok Sethi.

 This is notable that Mr. Gurjeet Sekhon Born on 28th December, 1963 at Hissar. He did his schooling from GHPS, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. Then he pursued B.Sc. Agri.Hons (1981-85) and MBA (1985-87) from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

He runs a K-12 school, the largest IT training school in North India and an IATA travel agency. He was elected as member of Managing Directors Quality Club by NIIT which is the ultimate recognition is given to business partner by Asia’s No.1 IT training company. He was honored by Government of Punjab for his contribution to IT education on Independence Day Parade in 2001. Presently he is Vice-President of Amritsar Management Association.

Gurjeet joined Rotary Club Amritsar Civil Lines as Charter member in 1994. During the last 20 years, he has served the club in various capacities. He was elected as District Governor on 16th February, 2012.
