In a message, he said that a long time socialist, trade unionist and an outstanding parliamentarian, Shri Fernandes had tirelessly worked for the empowerment of poor and downtrodden sections of the society. He was an able administrator and had held important portfolios as a Union Minister, he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Following is the text of Vice President\u2019s message<\/u>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of Shri George Fernandes, former Defence Minister of India.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shri Fernandes was a multi-faceted personality. A long time socialist, trade unionist and an outstanding parliamentarian, he had tirelessly worked for the empowerment of poor and downtrodden sections of the society. He was a champion of democracy and fought against the imposition of Emergency.
