Amritsar, Nov 19 (Punjab Post Bureau)  – The 6th<\/sup>Annual S. Jagtar Singh Dhesi Memorial lecture was organized by \"PPNJ1911201908\"School of Social Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University in the memory of Late S. Jagtar Singh Dhesi under the Endowment Fund <\/em>which has been instituted by his family in his memory.<\/p>\n

            Prof Dr. Rajesh Gill from Department of Sociology, Panjab University Chandigarh delivered this lecture on \u201cGender Equations: Let Us be Change Agents\u201d. Prof. Hardeep Singh, Dean Student Welfare was the special guest on this occasion.<\/p>\n

             The department has been organising this memorial lecture every year since 2013. Talking about S.Jagtar Singh Dhesi<\/em>, Dr. Rajesh Kumar said that  S. Dhesi devoted his life to social work and development. He made a notable contribution to the integration of immigrants into the host society. Inspired by liberal, progressive thought, he shunned narrowdogmatic social, political, and economic ideas.<\/p>\n

            While talking about the theme of Gender Equations, Prof. Gill highlighted the fact that how \u201cYouth Can Be Change Agents\u201d in promoting gender equality.  She started her lecture by theoretically explaining the terms Gender and Sex. Also, highlighted the concept of Masculinity and Feminity with the help of examples, i.e. \u201cBoys can\u2019t cry\u201d and \u201cGirls need to walk delicately\u201d.  She talked about biological difference and hierarchy in society. She spoke that we must break the stereotypical attitudes which are there in society. She said that there is a need to break our silence and highlighted that girls should also come out of their comfort zones. For this both boys and girls have to be agents of change; to change gender equation in today\u2019s time. For this support of men in society is must.  It is also the duty of men to speak against inequality and how \u201csilence becomes consent<\/em>\u201d in promoting inequality in society.<\/p>\n

          She also spoke about legal provisions which aim at promoting gender equality but also highlighted that only laws are not enough.  It is the psychological aspect of the society which needs to be changed. At  last she highlighted that we must respect all the genders in society in order to move towards progressive society and follow the principles of humanism.<\/p>\n

          Professor Hardeep Singh, Dean Students Welfare also gave his concluding remarks about the lecture. Adding on to what professor Gill said, he said mere legal laws are not enough to bring gender equality in society. He said that laws are not deterrent and no one is born in mind with gender inequalities. He also highlighted how education plays an important role to bring change in society and it is must for us not just to be literate but educated. Dr. Rajesh Kumar thanked the guests, all the faculty members and students.<\/p>\n
