Guru Nanak Dev University organized a webinar on Disability: Prospects & Challenges in collaboration with PhulkariCan, the philanthropic wing of Phulkari, the leading women\u2019s organization in Amritsar to mark the International Day of persons with Disabilities. The aim of the webinar was to create awareness & focus on understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent as per the 2020 theme \u2018Not all Disabilities are Visible\u2019 <\/p>\n
The inaugural speech at the webinar was delivered by Professor Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice- Chancellor. In his message, Dr. Sandhu said that people with disabilities are disproportionately affected by the health, social and economic consequences of the global Covid-19 pandemic. This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of strengthening collective efforts for universal access to essential services, including immediate health and social protection, education, digital infrastructure, accessible information, employment and other socio-cultural opportunities. Persons with disabilities are not to be left behind in times of crisis.’<\/p>\n
Noted speakers dwelt on various aspects of the topic & spoke about the urgent need to create sensitization towards persons with disabilities & assimilate them in the main stream society. Eminent speakers included Prof. (Dr.) Amit Kauts, Professor in School of Education at GNDU, Dr. Vinay Pathak, Former Chairman, Language Commission Chhattisgarh and President of Akhil Bhartiya Viklang Chetana Parishad, Bilaspur, Naresh Modgil Incharge Chairman, Permanent Lok Adalat ( PUS) District Courts Amritsar & Dr. Sunil Kumar, Nodal Officer of Equal Opportunity Cell for Persons with Disabilities at GNDU. The session was moderated by Dr. Sonali Soni, member Phulkari & was concluded by Professor (Dr.) Hardeep Singh Dean Students Welfare Guru Nanak Dev University. Prof. Hardeep Singh said, ‘ World Disability Day is being held in the shadow of the Covid-19 this year. The pandemic has deepened inequalities affecting around one billion people with disabilities globally.’ <\/p>\n
Nidhi Sindhwani, President PhulkariCAN, said, \u201cAccording to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15 per cent of the world\u2019s population is living with disabilities and two-thirds of these people do not seek professional medical help, largely due to stigma, discrimination, and neglect. This session aimed at highlighting their plight.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr.Sunil Kumar, Nodal Officer of EOC-PWD, said, ‘ the event was open to the public, and particularly to persons with disabilities, their friends, family and colleagues. Participation in this important event have enhanced the celebration of Persons with disabilities as empowered agents of change. More than 500 hundred participants took participate in this event.’<\/p>\n
Deepa Swani President Phulkari WOA said, \u201cDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation, disconnect, disrupted routines and diminished services have greatly impacted the lives and mental well-being of people with disabilities around the world. This session is the need of the hour in these unusual times\u201d Phulkari Founder, Praneet Bubber, Vice President, Sheetal Khanna, & Program Head, Priyanka Goyal, were also present on this occasion.<\/p>\n
