Chandigarh, October 22 (Punjab Post Bureau)- The Press Council of India (PCI) is fully committed to ensure the safety and security of Journalists and the Freedom of the Press for survival of the democracy in the country with an integrated approach involving each and every person and institution working for the welfare of the journalists.<\/p>\n
Addressing a national seminar on \u201cChallenges before Media and Safety of Journalists\u201d today at Chandigarh Press Club organized by Punjab & Chandigarh Journalists Union (PCJU) as the chief guest, PCI Chairman Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad said that PCI is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi will be the chief guest for the occasion to kick starts the year long celebrations on November 16, 2016 \u2013 the National Press Day function at New Delhi. He said that a series of functions of seminars, symposia and conferences will be conducted throughout the year all over the country on the issues of safety & security of the Journalists and the Freedom of the Press. Justice Prasad stressed the need to ensure safety, security and protection \u2013 physical, social and financial of the journalists specially in rural areas these being more vulnerable to physical attacks on the journalists.<\/p>\n
Two members of PCI, Shri S N Sinha, President Indian Journalists Union (IJU) and Shri Kosuri Amarnath; Shri Balwinder Singh Jammu, President PCJU, Veteran Journalists Shri Gobind Thukral also addressed the seminar followed by the question \u2013 answer session. A large number of prominent journalists of the region attended the seminar. The PCI was first set up in the year 1966 by the Parliament on the recommendations of the First Press Commission with the object of preserving the freedom of the press and of maintaining and improving the standards of press in India. The present Council functions under the Press Council Act, 1978. It is a statutory, quasi judicial authority functioning as a watchdog of the press, for the press and by the press.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
