Professor Reimer discussed the institutional and departmental policies and procedures for measuring and improving the quality of teaching and research at the University of California at Berkeley. Each department at his campus undergoes a comprehensive review every ten years. This review includes a self-assessment written by the faculty and students, but most important includes a visit by an external review committee of outside scholars of extraordinary reputation. Individual faculty are reviewed per a regular, published schedule; faculty compensation is tied to the outcome of the reviews that consists of an analysis of teaching, research, and service. Classroom teaching is assessed based on peer observations, course outcomes, course design, mentorship of teaching assistants, and surveys of student feelings. Measuring student learning transcends written and oral examinations to include student projects that create new knowledge; student service that applies new knowledge; innovative use by students of big data, media, and graphical analyses; and reinforcement of critical reading and writing skills. Professor Reimer noted the roles of physical, cultural, industrial, and educational geography on enhancing institutional reputation &#8211; these geographies can be exploited by Guru Nanak Dev University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prof. Bernhard Bluemich of RWTH Aachen University, the leading technical University in Germany, reported about the game changing steps taken by the university administration and professors to improve the quality of teaching and create conditions and infrastructure that enable frontier interdisciplinary research. With the universities like UC Berkeley, Stanford and MIT in the USA as role models, RWTH Aachen University is defining its own strategy to challenge the best universities worldwide in excellence of teaching and research. In addition to high-level quality monitoring of teaching methodology and performance, collaborative research activities are stimulated by program incentives for visionary and cross-disciplinary activities involving several traditional departments in science, engineering and medicine that engage in long-term projects subject to periodic evaluation and competitive funding. RWTH Aachen is eager transform itself to educate the best students and to do the best research. As part of this effort, the campus is considerably enlarged with new buildings to accommodate lecture halls, teaching laboratories and science &amp; technology clusters in close contact with support by global industry and the city of Aachen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prof. A. S Brar, vice-chancellor of the university welcomed the two scientists. A large number of faculty members and students were present during the lecture.
