Amritsar, June 28 (Punjab Post Bureau)- \u201cOne in ten persons develops heel pain in life. However foot and ankle problems are the most neglected areas amongst general public. Often one can see people limping or using a stick but shirking from going in for a foot or ankle treatment that may have occurred due to a minor accident but aggravated to a chronic stage.\u201d These were part of the lessons learnt at the First in Amritsar \u201c2nd<\/sup> Indo-US Foot and ankle 2-day course\u201d organized by local Amandeep Hospital in collaboration with US based Parekh Family Foundation created by Dr Selene G Parekh- who founded the idea of such courses, five years back.<\/p>\n The academic session that opened at Hotel Radisson Blu today comprised of nearly 90 orthopedic surgeons from India and abroad who participated along with fresh ortho-surgeons keen to enter this newly established vast specialty field. The International chairs were occupied by faculty Dr Asish Shah (USA) Dr Jason Calhoun (US) Dr Nicholas Savva (UK ) and National chair Dr Rajiv Shah\u00a0 (Baroda) who were extended a warm welcome by Dr Avtar Singh Chief Orthopedic Department, Dr Rajeev Vohra specialist foot and ankle hosts from Amandeep hospital, Amritsar.<\/p>\n During lectures besides hands on workshops on bone models, multimedia presentation and group discussions ideas and latest management techniques were discussed that led to emergence of many vital areas that reflected on daily lifestyle and age related degenerative effects as well as congenital (birth) defects, that could be corrected with minor surgery, thus completely altering the work prospects, lifestyle, marriage prospects, restoring high mobility, posture and\u00a0 appearance of a person . \u00a0Besides America and United Kingdom delegates had arrived from Goa, Baroda, Delhi, Pune, Ludhiana Jalandhar, Yamunagar, Jammu, Ludhiana, Patiala\u00a0 and Chandigarh. \u00a0Dr Nicolas Savva (US) demonstrated about talus neck fracture (mid foot) caused with sudden bracing actions such as when applying emergency brakes forcefully during a vehicle accident or fall from a height.<\/p>\n Dr Ashish Shah (US) reflected on the accurate examination of foot and ankle with live demonstrations while Dr Rajiv Shah shed light on how to carry out foot and ankle radiology. According to a \u00a0recent study, Fractures of the foot accounted for 12.3% of all fractures.The Greek mythology related to the delicate segment of \u2018Achilles heel\u2019 rupture that results in sapping of overall strength was presented by Dr Sampat Dumbre Patil. Later the repair, tendon surgery and reconstruction of Achilles heel were demonstrated on bone models.
