The painful condition of a nail going deeper into the skin can be easily cured with a minor surgery, stated Dr. Rajiv Shah during his lecture on causes and concerns about ingrown toe nails. While local foot and ankle specialist of Amandeep Hospital Dr Rajeev Vohra shed light on the treatment of open fractures of foot and ankle in the Indian scenario.<\/p>\n<p>These were part of discussions\u00a0 on the final day of the First in Amritsar \u201c2nd Indo-US Foot and ankle 2-day course\u201d organized by local Amandeep Hospital in collaboration with US based Parekh Family Foundation at Hotel Radisson Blu today. Dr. Avtar Singh head of Orthopedics and director of Amandeep Hospital stated that the hospital was focusing on injuries and complications regarding the specialty of foot and ankle problems which are often ignored and given little importance even by the orthopedic surgical fraternity.<\/p>\n<p>Discussions and demonstrations on bone models, enlightened about\u00a0 90 top orthopedic\u00a0 specialists from the country and abroad about conditions of Hammer and claw toes, spastic foot due to celebral palsy and foot disorders due to diabetes. According to Dr. Jason Calhoun, Diabetes has emerged as one of the biggest factors for foot problems caused due to disease other than those caused by accidents, sports injuries or genetic disorders which remain the other major causes of foot and ankle problems.<\/p>\n<p>Another discussion focused on the common occurrence of deformed toes due to age factors and faulty footwear. Many senior citizens can be seen with deformed toes that become the major cause of postural defects leading to other ortho related problems and has an easy solution in surgery. Discussions on sports injuries led to the conclusion that ankle sprain is one of the commonest injuries. Moreover in all sports injuries, the rate of ankle sprains ranges from 15 to 20 % and that 10%-30% of all acute sprains result in chronic problems in the ankle.<\/p>\n<p>In the sports segment the role of flat foot, latest techniques and devices relating to its management and care, was extensively discussed by Dr Ashish Shah (USA). \u201cInfants are born with flat foot, but most children develop normal foot arch by teenage years however 6% of the population fails to develop the arch leading to the condition of being flat footed. Sometimes having a flat foot becomes a big hurdle in recruitment in security setups like army and other advanced security service jobs.\u201d \u00a0Dr. Amit Bhargav talking about Hallux varus related to toe area, stated that according to a study the prevalence of foot ulcers reported for a variety of populations\u2019 ranges from 2% to 10%. He further added, that 7% to 20% of patients with foot ulcers subsequently require an amputation.
