Amritsar, March 7 (Punjab Post Bureau) – DAV College, celebrated International Women’s Day on March 4th 2020
with an aim to create awareness regarding gender equality. The program started with a formal welcome of the guests, renowned poetess Artinder Sandhu and poet Dev Dard by Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar. Dr. Rajesh Kumar briefly introduced the audiences with the lives and achievements of both the poets. He further lauded the role of women contributors to the society wherein Poetess Artinder Sandhu stands tall. She is the Editor of Punjabi Magazine Ekam and a member of Punjabi Sahit Academy. He was himself surprised to find her being a Science student and then becoming a poetess.
The chief guest Poetess Artinder Sandhu shared her elation to be in her alma-mater on such a momentous occasion remembering ‘Clara Zetkin’ the German Women Activist who organized the first International Women’s Day. She remembered the unsung Indian Poetess Laxmi Devi Bedi who has also worked meticulously for women causes. She further emphasized the need of equality towards treating women in general and equal pay, rights in particular. She told that we are living in dangerous times where women and mother tongue are not safe. On a nostalgic note she also said that she felt empowered when she published the third issue of her magazine. She called upon the girl students to gain wings and fly high creating their own identity.
The guest of honour, renowned poet Dev Dard expressed his joy to be in DAV College, Amritsar. He emphasized that today’s world belongs to women much stronger than men. He further added that girls are far more qualified and possess higher emotional quotient than men. Focusing upon the importance of mother tongue, he narrated a number of poetic stanzas. Gagandeep Singh of BSc. Economics also narrated a poem on Nari Shakti.
Dr. Darshandeep, Vice Principal, DAV College gave his peculiarly observatory stances by reading out a poem, highlighting the role of goodness and morality in life. Dr. Parveen Thakur, Convener of women cell told about Gargi, Rni Padmavati, Rani Durgavati and Rani Laxmibai and the Aurat Shakti that is manifested in the form of Artinder Sandhu. She thanked the guest Artinder Sandhu and Mr. Dev Dard for sparing their time for the college. She also thanked Dr. Rajesh Kumar for his continuous support.
