BBK DAV College Women organizes Eye Donation Awareness Camp

Amritsar, September 14 (Punjab Post Bureai) – BBK DAV College for Women organized an Eye Donation Camp in collaboration with Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College Amritsar to mark the National Eye Donation Fortnight which is observed from August 25 to September 8 every year. On this occasion, Dr. Dinesh and Dr. Ankush Ophthalmologists and Mrs. Geetanjali Eye Bank Counselor marked their presence as guests.

             During the address Mrs. Geetanjali explained the meaning of cornea as well as the reasons of corneal blindness. She termed visual impairment as one of the major health impediments and highlighted the fact that millions of people in India suffer from blindness. She also explained the steps which can be taken from eye donation. She also added that the first eye bank was opened in New York in 1944 and later in Chennai in 1945. Now, eye banks are available in Amritsar at two hospitals.

               Dr. Dinesh Ophthalmologist, reiterated the need is to increase the number of eye donations so that corneal blindness could be alleviated. He also said that we need to createstorage infrastructure and expertise to conduct transplant surgeries.

                Dr. Ankush interacted with the students and faculty and answered their queries.

               Principal Dr. PushpinderWalia felicitated the efforts of NSS Program Officer Ms. SurbhiSethiand entire NSS teamfor the successful conduct of the camp and inspired all to come forward for this noble cause.

               The event concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Simardeep Dean (Academics).
