
New Delhi, Sept. 17 (Punjab Post Bureau) – International Centre for Sikh studies organized a lecture by S. Nanak Singh Nishter as part of their monthly series on Sikh history, philosophy and religion. The afternoon lecture begin with Dr. Harbans Kaur Sagoo director of the centre introducing the speaker and welcoming the esteemed chief guest Prof. Jaspal Singh Vc of the Punjabi University Patiala, Manjit Singh g.k. President Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee all others Present. S. Kulmohan Singh Member DSGMC & Coordinator also extended a warm gracious welcome to the learned speaker the chief guest and all others present.
Nanak Singh Nishter begin his talk by tracing the history of Nanded that is relevance with the role of local Sikhs, their wing and management of the Takhat Sahib he rectified the commonly held the belief that it was the Britishers who united the boundaries of the country. Quoting bani he arrived that rather this union was begun by Guru Sahiban in 17th C.
Nanded was one of the five Takhats and existence of Sikhs in this area is traced back to the times of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and in the time of his first ‘Udasi’ in 1512 who passed through Nanded. Guru Gobind Singh along with 300 Sikhs too had come to Nanded in the company of Emperor Bahadur Shah in 1708 A.D. Hence around three centuries back Guru Sahib himself had laid the foundation of Sikh Muslim friendship.
Nanak Singh Nishter mentioned how a spot was chosen as the place for Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s cremation by shooting an arrow and how the place was got from Muslim Inamdar ‘Bhikhu Miyan’ who offered the land free of cost and in return he was confessed with honors and valuables. Nishter also, lamented how historians hear overlooked the humanitarian gesture of Sikhs of those times. Then he talked of ‘Jemait-I-Sikhan’ “British Resident Report and Gurdwara Sahib Maal Tekri Dispute”.
The lecture also touched upon how Banda Bahadur is a product of Nanded. He concluded the lecture by appealing to the intelligentsia to wake up and administer their note to set right the things in a lifting manner. Prof. Jaspal Singh commanded Nanak Singh on the research carried out by him. He also voiced concern how Sikh from the Deccan are being separated from the mainstream. He also mentioned how ‘Halla Bol’ is still being carried out at Nanded which is the traditional display of arms and ammunition, Nanded is important to Sikh history as Guru Gobind Singh had given Guruship to Guru Granth sahib at this holy place.
