Amritsar, Jan. 27 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The students of DAV Public School Lawrence Road paid rich tribute to Lala Lajpat Rai on his birth anniversary which falls on January 28. He played a pivotal role in the Indian Independence movement. Remembering the great freedom fighters, the students sang patriotic songs, recited poems highlighting the sacrifices of freedom fighters and narrated a few important events from the life of Lala ji . He was a prominent member of the famous ‘Lal Bal Pal’ firebrand trio during the Independence movement. His patriotism and potent vocalism against the British rule earned him the title of Punjab Kesri or ‘the Lion of Punjab’. He was badly injured in police lathi–charge on the activists, who were protesting the arrival of Simon Commission, and died a few days later due to injuries. He was a follower of Swami Dayanand Saraswati and helped establish the nationalistic Dayanand Anglo–Vedic School.In the end the students took a pledge to imbibe the values of patriotism and nationalism and join hands to make the country great. Regional Director Punjab Zone–A Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra and the Manager of the school, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Principal DAV College Amritsar in their message asked the students to read about the sacrifices, valour and ideals of such great leaders and learn the meaning of true living. Dr. Neera Sharma Principal of the school while addressing the students said that he had made a lasting impression on the minds of the countrymen even for the generations to come. He would be remembered for his leadership abilities and role in establishing various organisations for the welfare of the society. She added that we must remember such great personalities with reverence.
