Amritsar, Nov. 22 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Khalsa College Governing Council, a conglomerate of educational institutions including historic Khalsa College today commemorated the 549th birth anniversary of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, with a colourful mega-religious procession. The parade passed through the city’s main roads and streets with religious fervour and devotion writ large as `Nagar Kirtan’ which started from Khalsa College and culminated at Golden Temple
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee office bearers received the organizers including KCGC honorary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina on reaching the precincts of Darbar Sahib. The students from Khalsa institutions chanted hymns from Gurbani as they took part in the parade, which was led by flower-decked palanquin (Palki Sahib) and `five beloveds’ (Panj Payaras).
The staff and students recited Gurbani and sang devotional songs and passed through GT Road, Putlighar, Railway Station, New Bhandari Bridge, Hall Bazaar, finally reaching Golden Temple complex where the prayers were held. The devotees beelined the streets and roads to welcome the procession in their areas as the school bands, NCC, NSS and Gatka teams presented the colourful shows.
The devotees amidst beats of `Nagadas’ (drums) and slogans of `Bole so Nihal’ passed chanting Shabads in praise of Guru Nanak. Chhina, while congratulating all on the occasion of Gurpurab said Guru Nanak message of universal brotherhood and world peace is highly relevant in the trouble torn world today. Principal Dr.Mehal Singh said the procession is taken as per the traditions established by the 1890 set up KCGC and is annual feature.
He added that the main objective of the KCGC is to promote modern education as well as assert the values, morals, principles and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev ji in the students and that the Management is planning to organize several programs all around the year including various religious seminars, kirtans and religious competitions in various institutions dedicated for 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji which is coming in 2019.
Various social, religious and educational institutions including Chief Khalsa Diwan welcomed the Nagar Kirtan on the way.
