Amritsar, February 4 (Punjab Post Bureau) – National Mathematics Day Celebration at the Guru Nanak Dev
University, Amritsar Every year nation celebrates birth anniversary of Ramanujan on 22nd December. The main objective behind the celebration of National Mathematics Day is to make people aware of the development of mathematics and its importance in the growth of humanity. Department of Physics and Mathematics at the Guru Nanak Dev University celebrated National Mathematics Day on 2nd Feb., 2022 in support with Punjab State Council for Science; Technology (PSCST) National Council for Science; Technology Communication (NCTSC) Department of Science; Technology (DST).
The celebration was inaugurated by Prof. Hardeep Singh, Dean Academic Affairs of the University. Prof. Singh boosted up the spirits of audience by praising such initiatives. He talked about the importance of celebrating National Mathematics Day. Eminent speakers for the day were Dr. Sudesh Kaur Khanduja, INSA Senior Scientist, IISER Mohali; Dr. M.Ram Murty A.V Douglas Distinguished University Professor and Queen’s Research Chair, Queen’s University Canada and Dr. Ashish Arora, Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, Punjab Technical University. Prof. Khanduja talked about Fascination of prime numbers during her lecture.
Prof Murty gave an enlightening lecture on the mathematical legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan. The last lecture was given by Prof Ashish Arora who talked about the ancient Indian Mathematicians and their contributions. The celebration included students’ seminars where students from various institutes gave talks on various mathematics topics. The celebration came to a fruitful end with Dr. Bindiya Arora Department of Physiccs and Dr. Jitender Singh, Department of Mathematics thanking Punjab State Council for Science and Technology for extending their support in organising the event successfully.
