Amritsar, October 30 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Ruhani Verma the daughter of our city and a student of Jayshree Periwal International School Jaipur grade 12 had a project to conceive India’s first community toilet with 100% recycled and recyclable material only. Under The Special Campaign 2.0 Swachh Bharat Abhiyan project was undertaken at the Shri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport, Amritsar called Swachh Alya. She said, “A project started by me whose heart is sustainability. I aimed to build India’s first structure using environment-friendly bricks. 30% of this brick is made from single-use plastic, and 70% out of waste, silica dust.”
The waste production especially single-use plastic littered across our countryside, is a concerning issue not only in India but globally too and this problem has only been increasing each year drastically.
As claimed by Miss Ruhani Verma this is a call out to the youth to promote “sustainability as the only way forward for our built environment”. During her journey with this project, Ruhani was able to save 4 lakh bags of single-use plastic and recycle them to make bricks. Fun fact: If these plastic bags are lined up, they cover 150 km. of distance. The idea of interlocking bricks, like Lego blocks, was used to bind the bricks together, as this structure used zero water or cement to ultimately, build a carbon-negative building.
With the facility Swachh Alya created at the vehicle parking area of Shri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport, the initiative is strongly supporting the spirit of Swachh Bharat Mission cleanliness and save environment.
The project was inaugurated by Honorable Member of Parliament Gurjeet Aujla and Amritsar Airport Director V.K Seth as one step forward to keep Amritsar Airport more clean.
