Amritsar, Feb. 13 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The department of Zoology of BBK DAV College for Women organized a DBT Sponsored workshop on “Vermiculture and Vermicomposting” on 10th February, 2015. This workshop was held to apprise the students with usefulness of earthworms in agriculture. The workshop was preceded by a lecture on vermicomposting delivered by Dr. (Mrs.) Arvinder Kaur, Professor, Dept. of Zoology, Guru Nanak Dev University. The students of B.Sc. (Med) semester-II were taken to the vermicomposting unit of Guru Nanak Dev University to understand the concept of vermicomposting and the latest research being conducted in the university in this applied field. The students learnt the technical aspects of vermicomposting and had an interactive session with the resource person. Dr. Arvinder Kaur explained the methods for increasing the nitrogen content of the vermicompost and enrichment of the vermicompost with various micronutrients. She emphasized the significance of organic farming for human health and strongly negated the use of pesticides which are very harmful as they lead to various diseases. It is pertinent to mention here that BBK DAV College for Women was conferred with “STAR COLLEGE STATUS” by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, in January 2014. The Star College Scheme aims at strengthening the basic sciences at the undergraduate level. The Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra motivated the students to propagate the concept of organic farming among the masses. She congratulated the staff and the students for the success of this workshop.
