Dr. A.K.Thukral of the Department of Botanical and Environmental of Guru Nanak Dev University, has been awarded the coveted honour of “Professor Emeritus” by the UGC, New Delhi. Emeritus fellowship is awarded to a Professor who has made immense contributions in teaching and research.
The UGC has selected only three professors in Environmental Sciences, he being the only one from north India. Prof. Thukral obtained his Ph.D. from BITS, Pilani, and Post-doctorate from the University of Moscow. He has 37 years of teaching and research experience. He has supervised 18 Ph.D. students and published 180 research papers, 5 patents and 4 books. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London and International Association of Computer Science and Technology, Singapore, besides other awards and recognitions. Besides biology, Dr. Thukral has expertise in environmental conservation, remote sensing, computational and statistical techniques, and research methodology. He is one of the first few computer experts of India since 1975, when there were less than 10 computers in whole of the country. He has held several important positions such as Director of Research, Dean of Life Sciences, Dean of Students Welfare, Head of the Department etc.
