Amritsar, Feb. 10 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The department of Zoology and Botany of DAV College organized Poster Making competition on the occasion of celebration of World Wetland Day 2019 for the science students on 6 February, 2019. This event was sponsored by Punjab State Council for Science and technology. This year’s theme for the event was Wetlands and Climate Change. The main aim behind organising this event was to raise global awareness on the value of wetlands for humanity and the planet. In this competition, Approx 200 students participated enthusiastically. Dr. Manpreet Singh Bhatti Associate Professor and Head department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences GNDU was the chief guest and key note speaker during the occasion. Principal Dr. Rajesh Kumar gave floral welcome to the guest and congratulated both the departments for organizing such intellectual events which helps students to explore their hidden talents. He also motivated the science students to participate in such competitions and to understand importance of wetlands. On this occasion prizes were also awarded to the winners by Prof Anita Mahajan, Head department of Chemistry Professor Dr. Rajni Bala and Dr. Vikas Gupta, Head department of Biotechnology. Speaking on occasion Dr. Manpreet Singh Bhatti talked about importance of wetlands that how vital they are for human survival. They are among the world’s most productive environments; cradles of biological diversity that provide the water and productivity upon which countless species of plants and animals depend for survival. He also talked about its countless benefits or “ecosystem services” that they provide humanity, ranging from freshwater supply, food and building materials, and biodiversity, to flood control, groundwater recharge, and climate change mitigation. Dr. Daisy Sharma Head Department of Botany, Dr. Rajni Khanna, Head Department of Zoology, Dr. Rajni Bala, Dr. Ashish Gupta, Prof. Amanjot Kaur, Dr. Neeraj Gupta, Prof. Renu Chauhan, Prof. Nihita Sharma, Prof. Mehak and Prof. Rakesh Joshi were also present.
