City gets maiden Model Career Centre

Amritsar, January 25 (Punjab Post Bureau)- The UGC conferred Guru Nanak Dev University with the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” in 2012 under which a grant of Rs. 100 crore was sanctioned. In recognition to this achievement, a Model Career Centre (MCC) has been established at the University campus by UGC and Ministry of Labour and Employment. Under this program, a grant of Rs.32 Lakhs has been sanctioned. The University is one of the few universities in the North, which has been granted MCC. The Ministry of Labour and Employment and UGC have granted this status to University due to its high academic standards and excellent ratings in NAAC and NIRF in the country.

Keeping in view the remarkable performance of Placement Department of the University, Model Career Centre has been established at Placement Department. This Department has been successfully working since 1998 and National and multinational companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Capgemini, Nagarro, Computer Science Corporation (CSC), Axis Bank, Trident, Aakash Institutes and many other conducted campus placements at University every year.

The prime motive of the Model Career Centre is to bring the job seekers and employers on one platform. The youths can register themselves on the centralized National Career Service (NCS) portal www.ncs.gov.in or by using the Toll Free No. 1800 425 1514. At the NCS portal, jobseekers can apply for jobs, register to take part in job fairs and review the latest employment trends by going through the reports. Already 4 crore job seekers and 15 lakh employers have been registered on NCS portal.

The portal has district-wise lists of counsellors, skill development centres and placement agencies. The emphasis at model career centre will be on counselling of jobseekers and local service providers. After counselling if jobseekers are found lacking in some skill, they will be directed to skill development training centres. The Model Career Centre will be able to help to solve the unemployment problem of this region.
