Amritsar, May 24 (Punjab Post Bureau) –
Member Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla today met Mr. Luigi Estero Minister Counsellor Deputy Head of Mission & Luigi Gentile, First Secretary, Political Affairs at Embassy of Italy in New Delhi and discussed the kirpan ban judgement of Supreme Court of Cassation. Mr. Luigi informed that unlike Supreme Court of India the judgement of Supreme Court of Italy applies only on individual involved in the case and not on entire community. The judgements of Italian Courts do not have law as is prevalent in India. Therefore there is no ban on carrying/wearing religious symbols in Italy as is considered by many; however every individual will have to obey the laws of the land. He further informed that Italy respects Sikhs as a peace loving and progressive community so the government is always willing to discuss the matters and reach to an amiable solution to these identity issues. Aujla said that the meeting was very fruitful and many confusions in this regard were clarified. He said that there is an environment of chaos since the judgement by Supreme Court of Italy but the officials have explained the actual facts. Aujla also submitted a memorandum to the Ambassador of Italy in this regard. He also appreciated the organisations which are working to resolve the identity and symbol issues of Sikhs.
