BBK DAV organized DBT Sponsored Workshop on “Basic Techniques in Hematopathology”

Amritsar, Aug. 14 (Punjab Post Bureau)- The Department of Zoology of BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar, organized a workshop on “Basic techniques in Hematopathology”. This workshop was sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi as BBK DAV College has been conferred “STAR COLLGE STATUS” vide star college scheme for strengthening of Life Sciences at undergraduate level in January,2014. The workshop will last for two days i.e. 13.08.2014 to 14.08.2014. The workshop was inaugurated by Mrs. Manbir Kaushal, Vice Principal of the college. Dr. Rahul Manan, Associate Professor in Department of Pathology, Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research acted as the resource person for this workshop. He explained the Morphology & identification of various blood corpuscles, using power-point presentation. The students were apprised with the techniques of preparation and staining of blood smear, identification of various species of malarial parasites and differential leucocyte count. Dr. Manan alongwith the faculty members of Department of Zoology demonstrated the use of hematology analyzer for determining complete blood count (CBC). The students of B.Sc Medical Semester-V and B.Sc Biotechnology Semester-III prepared the slides and determined the CBC from the blood sample.

The students were provided the training in techniques of sample collection and preservation pertaining to medical laboratory technology. Dr. Monika Bhardwaj, Head of Department of Zoology, who is also the coordinator of “STAR COLLEGE SCHEME”, explained the significance and diagnostic value of determining complete blood count. Other teachers from Dept. of Zoology i.e. Ms. Prabhjot Kaur, Ms. Isha Babbar, Mrs. Ridhima Vij,  Ms. Ashima Mehra & Mrs Prabhjot also performed the laboratory exercise with the students. This workshop was attended by the faculty of Deptt. of Physical & Life Sciences including Mrs. Rashmi Kalia, Dr. Shaveta Mohan & Dr. Poonam Khullar. Mr. Vinod & Mr. Rahul, lab attendants in Dept. of Zoology helped the students to carry out the laboratory work.
