Amritsar, Jan. 26 (Punjab Post Bureau) – In compliance to the instructions from Government of India National Voters’ Day was celebrated by the Department of Political Science Dept. of DAV College. Prof. Mulkh Raj Chopra Retired HOD (Political Science) DAV College was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Principal of the college Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Prof. Surinder Kumar Head of the Department and Dr. Gaurav Sharma, Assistant Professor extended floral welcome to the Chief Guest and honoured him with shawl and momento.
In his address, Prof. Surinder Kumar outlined the historical background of the Right to Vote in India. He further hailed the importance of voting by reminding students about the price our freedom fighters paid. He equated the casting of vote with a rich tribute to freedom fighters. He also explained to the students about the procedure of getting registered as a proud voter of India to ensure ‘No Voter is left’ in Voters Registration Campaign being run by Election Commission of India.
Programme zoomed ahead with the welcome of Chief Guest by Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Principal DAV College. He appealed the students to be vigilant about their rights and duties. He further emphasised on the importance of voting in democratic set up. He also touched upon the role of ethics in shaping sound voting behaviour particularly for the budding voters.
A ‘Public Speaking Competition’ was organised on the themes related to ‘Electoral System in India’. About 15 students participated in the competition. They spoke on various themes like: Right to Vote in India; Role of Election Commission; Role of Media in Politics; Caste in Politics; Criminalisation of Indian Politics; NOTA; Political Participation in Indian Democracy etc. The result of the competition was announced by Prof. Chopra, the Chief Guest of the Day and Mr./Ms Shubhdeep Singh was adjudged first, Mr./Ms Akash Dadwal second and Mr./Ms. Harry Sharma third. The prize winners were awarded trophies and certificates. All the participants were also awarded participation certificates and prizes..
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Chopra lauded the efforts of the Deptt. of Political Science for regularly organising such students’ centric activities and also the efforts of the participants. Regarding National Voters’ Day, Prof. Chopra urged the student voters and the prospective student voters to make a judicious and rational use of their Right to Vote. He also stressed that the success of democracy rests on the level of political participation in the country. Prof. Surinder Kumar, HOD presented the ‘Vote of Thanks’.
