Workshop on Rain Water Harvesting System at KCET

Saving the Water and Natural Resources Must: Dr. Joshi

 Amritsar, July 20 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Renowned hydro geologist Dr. Amar Joshi today gave a PUNJ2107201915clarian call to the public and private social milieu to make the rain water harvesting a movement. He said the water is most precious of the natural resources and every drop needed to be tapped and saved to meet the rising challenge of water scarcity in the country.

While speaking at the Seminar Cup Workshop on Rain Water Harvesting Techniques at Khalsa College of Engineering and Technology (KCET), Dr Joshi discussed the economical and effective methods for optimum rain water during the Monsoon. “The situation is turning alarming in the country. There is lots of rains but we are ill-prepared to harvest the water during the Monsoon”, said he.

He also  laid emphasis on new techniques like water sensitive urban designs, schedule for surface run off harvesting through recharge pits, infiltration basin and infiltration trenches, water catchment, delivery system and storage reservoir for garnering the water. Chief Guest at the program Deputy Commissioner Shivdular Singh Dhillon too shared the views on the need to make the rain water harvesting as a basic policy and its serious implementation.

The seminar was organized by the KCET in collaboration with Dilbir Foundation, the local NGO working for environment. KCET Director Dr. Manju Bala gave the required guidance and cooperation to organize the important event.

Khalsa College Governing Council finance secretary and Dilbir Foundation head Gunbir Singh who earlier welcomed Dr. Joshi called him an internationally acclaimed hydro management expert. He said the nation and especially Punjab need to gear up fast to face the challenge of water scarcity.

            “The concerted efforts are required from all the quarters including the government and societal level. The local bodies including Municipal Corporation and Panchayats must make the rain water harvesting mandatory at each and every building”, said he adding that there is dire need to create awareness among people about the importance of saving rain water and advised students and delegates to avoid using RO system as this system waste 70% of the water.

Dr. Rawal Singh Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture, Guru Nanak Dev University, Birnder Singh, Environmental Engineer, Denmark. All the dignitaries graced the occasion with the presence and shared their views with the audience.

Finally the vote of thanks was proposed by Er. Bikramjit Singh, Registrar. The volunteers from various NGO’S like Panni Collective, Phulkari, Majha House, Voice of Amritsar, Amritsar Vikas Manch, Mission AAGAAZ, Teachers and Students attended the workshop .
