One day UGC sponsored National Seminar on ‘Fashion Design & Textile Technology organized at BBK DAV College

Amritsar, Nov. 8 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Department of Bachelor of Fashion & Textile Designing alongwith PG Department of Fashion Designing and Merchandising today organized a one day UGC sponsored National Seminar on ‘Fashion Design & Textile Technology – A progression route towards Higher Education at BBK DAV College for Women.

The inaugural session of the seminar began with lightening of the lamp. Principal of the college Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra welcomed the guests in her speech and also highlighted the achievement of the college. She appreciated the efforts of the department for organizing the seminar. Chief Guest for the session Dr. Tarundeep Kaur, Deputy Commissioner, Income Tax, Amritsar in her address emphasized on women empowerment. She stressed that the same status should be extended to women that was given in our holy books.

Dr. Poonam Rampal, Head Department of Fashion Designing introduced the theme of the seminar. She stressed on the need to amalgamate visual images and forms with state of the art technology. She added that the educational institutions need to enhance their curriculum in order to meet the new trends of fashion industry.

Dr. Rita Kant, Assistant Professor, Institute of Fashion Technology, Punjab University, Chandigarh gave the key note address. She emphasized on the need of research to follow the progressive route towards higher education. She acquainted the students with the use of 3D software and how technology has created virtual dressing room.

During the first technical session, Mrs. Jyoti Bhatia, an entrepreneur from Jay Bee exports chaired the session. Other key speakers during the session were Dr. Kiran Kapoor, Lady Irwin College, New Delhi, Mrs. Poonam Aggarwal Academic Head, NIIFT, Mohali and Dr. Varinder Kaur Assistant Professor in Textile Chemistry from GNDU. They emphasized on promotion of traditional textiles and embroideries and use of bamboos fibers for textile application.

During the second technical session, Dr. Kiran Kapoor Chaired the session. Other speakers were Dr. Ms. Sunanda Khanna, Prof. & Head of Department of Clothing and Textiles institute of Home Science Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra, Ms. Jyoti Bhatia of Jay Bee Exports and Dr. Ruchi Khoiya, Head Department of Fashion Design, Footwear Design and Development Institute, Rohtak. The second session threw light on new perspectives of Fashion Education alongwith use of eco-friendly textiles.

The chief guest for the valedictory session was Dr. Renu Bhardwaj, Prof. Dept. of Botanical Sciences, Controller Examination, GNDU, Amritsar. She lauded the efforts of the faculty and students of the college.

Towards the end, Mrs. Mandeep Sokhi, Head of Deptt. of Fashion & Textile Designing read the seminar’s report. Mr. Sudershan Kapoor, Chairperson of DAV Local Managing Committee congratulated the college for conducting the event. Principal, Dr. Neera Sharma, Principal Dr. Shabnam Handa were also present on the occasion.

It is pertinent to note that nearly 35 faculty members and 130 students from various institution of the region attended the seminar.
