Guru Nanak Dev University Budget Estimates for year 2022-23 approved

Amritsar, March 21 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Senate and Syndicate of the Guru Nanak Dev University approved the Budget Estimates of 615 crore 93 lac and 19 thousand for the year 2022-23.  University would spend 45.63 percent amount on further improvement in Teaching, Allied Teaching, Research and Education.

          Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor presided over both the meetings and Prof. Karanjeet Singh Kahlon, Registrar presented the agenda in both the meetings. The members congratulated Prof. Sandhu and University Administration for presenting a balanced budget. Prof. Hardeep Singh, Dean Academic Affairs was also present. A large number of syndicate and senate members were present offline/online in the meetings.  

          During ensuing financial year 2021-22, the University has spent Rs. 2 crores 55 lac to help the economically backward and intelligent students in the form of fee concessions. The fee claim of Rs. 10 Crore 61 Lac of 1406 SC candidates under post matric scholarships for SC student has been sent to Government of Punjab and online claim for 62 students under National Scholarhip scheme has also been sent to the Government. All efforts were made by University to help the financially backward students so that they could achieve higher education and contribute their share in the progress of the nation. 

          During this financial year, University would spend 45.63 per cent of the total budget on Teaching, Allied Teaching, Research and Education. Similarly, 11.78 per cent would be spent on non-teaching departments, 10.46 percent on general administration, 3.63 percent on the conduct of examinations, 21.78 percent on miscellaneous (teaching,non-teaching and others) and 6.72 percent would be spent on construction purposes.

Vice Chancellor informed the house that now in the north region, Bhai Gurdas Library of the Guru Nanak Dev University is an automated and digitalized library with Digital Lounge, RFID System and Seminar Hall. The library has been redesigned and restructured in terms of physical and structural changes to cater to the needs of the 21st century learners who are more into exploring the e-content like videos and audios. The e-journals and e-books are freely available through inflibnet. 9239 e-journals have been subscribed by the university and 8678 e-books have been purchased. All the resources will be used by faculty, researchers, and students which will further facilitate the optimum utilization of e-resources. The University is spending approximately 2.25 Cr on  e Databases annually for improving the research output.

            Prof. Sandhu also informed the house about the achievements of the University in the field of research, education, culture, sports and excellent campus placements during this year. He said that H.Index of the University which was only 64 about five years ago, now stands at 124. He said that about 1023 students from various department of the University were placed in various national and international  companies.

          Due to the efforts of Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice Chancellor, a grant of Rs. 5 crores has been sanctioned by Govt of Punjab for Centre on Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies out of which three installments have already been received and fifth is expected soon. A grant of Rs. 2 crores for Digital Library had been received. A grant of Rs. 100 crore was approved under RUSA 2.0 out of which Rs. 41 crores 67 lacs has been received. Grant of about Rs. 1 Crore 87 Lacs from Ministry of Youth Affairs has been recieved for MYAS Department of Sports Science and Medicine for the year 2021-22.

          Second installment of Rs. 6.20 Crore grant has been received for the construction of Sports Hostel for 200 bedded (one for men and one for women) under Khelo India Scheme for 2021-22.

          In sports, 25 Gold, 16 Silver and 14 Bronze medals were won by the students of Guru Nanak Dev University and its colleges in the year 2021-22. University got first, second and third positions in various zonal and inter-zonal youth festival.  

          In the meeting, change of name of various institution has been approved in which Guru Gobind Singh College Govt.  College, Jandiala (Jalandhar) to Guru Gobind Singh University College, Jandiala (Jalandhar) ; Guru Nanak Dev University College, Kalanaur to Shaheed Lachhman Singh Dharowali University College, Kalanaur; Univesity Placement Unit to Directorate of Placement and Career Enhancement were included.

          The University will award honoris causa doctorate degrees to Sh. Iqbal Singh Chahal (IAS), Municipal Commissioner & Administrator of Brihanmumbai Municpal Corporation, Maharashtra and Prof. Gagandeep Kang (FRS), Department of Gastrointestinal Sciences at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu on the eve of 48th Annual Convocation of the University.

          A Book-Corner relating to humorist and celebrated satirist Dr. Gurnam Singh Tir will be established in the Bhai Gurdas Digital Library of the University in which books, articles and other written materials will be perserved.  

          Prof. Sandhu also thanked the members and University fraternity for their cooperation and guidance for the upliftment of the University. On this occasion, in both the meetings a large number of Syndicate and Senate members marked their presence offline/online.
