Amritsar, 11 Apr. ( Jagdeep Singh )- The Department of Zoology of BBK DAV College for Women, organized a workshop on “Hands-on Techniques in Clinical Haematology” on 11th April, 2014. The workshop was inaugurated by the Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra. The workshop will last till 12th April, 2014. The aim of this workshop was to determine Complete Blood Count (CBC) of the female students including Total leucocytes Count (TLC), Differential Leukocyte Count (DLC), Hemoglobin (Hb), RBC Count, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW & Platelet Count. Apart form these parameters, serum calcium was also determined. The anthropometric indices including age and BMI were recorded. In order to access the dietary habits of the students, a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was distributed to the students and a three-day dietary recall was recorded for each student. On this event, Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra encouraged the students to learn the techniques of automation in hematology. She congratulated the staff and students from faculty of sciences for successfully organizing this workshop. As a part of the curriculum, the students learnt the techniques of Blood-Sampling and operated the Hematology Analyzer themselves for determining the CBC. The faculty members demonstrated the techniques of determining various hematological parameters including serum calcium to the students. Ocean Medial Technology Ltd, Chandigarh, provided free Lyses reagent for facilitating this workshop. The cleaner and diluents solutions were also provided by this company at a considerably consessional rate. Dr. Monika Bhardwaj, Ms. Prabhjot Kaur, Ms. Isha Babbar & Mrs. Ridhima from Department of Zoology, trained the students for these hematological techniques. Mrs. Prabhjot from Department of Bioinformatics conducted the anthropometric and Dietary survey along with students. Mrs. Rashmi Kalia, HOD of Botany & Mrs. Shaveta Mohan, HOD of Physics also participated in this workshop.
