
Amritsar, September 20 (Punjab Post Bureau)- The Botany Department of DAV College, Amritsar celebrated World Ozone Day by organizing an awareness function in the college. Dr. Daizy Sharma, Head, Department of Botany said that 16th September is observed as United Nations’ International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer. It is the date on which Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete Ozone Layer was signed by 24 UN member nations in 1987to limit and ultimately phase out the production of manmade chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and 95 other ozone-depleting materials.
This day is mainly intended to spread awareness about the depletion of the ozone layer and search for solutions to preserve it. Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Principal of the college said that ozone layer is a fragile shield of gas that protects the earth from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun and thus helps in preserving life on this planet.
He informed that the theme of this year “Ozone and climate: Restored by the World United” recognizes the global efforts towards the restoration of the ozone layer over the past three decades and global commitment to combat climate change. The scientists have estimated thatdue to the continuing efforts at global level to reduce ozone depleting substances; the ozone layer will be fully restored by the year 2050. Dr. Rajesh Kumar motivated the students to reduce pollution and conserve energy for protecting the ozone layer. Prof. Mehak Chopra delivered an informative lecture on mechanism of formation and depletion of ozone layer, sources of ozone depleting substances and consequences of ozone depletion.
Dr. Rajni Bala, Dr. Ashish Gupta, Prof. Amanjot Kaur, Dr. Rajni Khanna, Prof. Renu Chauhan, Prof. Nihita Sharma, Dr. Rakesh Joshi and Prof. Palak Gupta were also present during the function.
