Canadian Minister Navdeep Bains discusses best farming practices with GIA Chairman

Amritsar, October 16 (Punjab Post Bureau)- During his visit to Canada, Chairman of Global Institutes Dr. B.S Chandi met Mr. Navdeep Singh Bains, Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and discussed best farming practices using technology that India could use, as one of the largest agro-based economies of the world.

Dr. Chandi put across to the Canadian Minister – the matter of innovative role of Science and Technology in the field of agriculture to transform farming in India, into a viable economic model especially for the farmers of Punjab, who are reeling under debt. Besides this, advanced technological researches in the agro field were discussed, for India, which urgently requires optimal resource management including water economy in farming, crop rotation and diversity of crops. The minister said Governments need a relook at management of government support in converting diversified crops into cash crops by fixing prices referred to as MSP (Minimum Support  Price) in India. Apart from this, better management of existing cash crops with methods to economize natural resources needs to be worked upon.

Dr. Chandi urged Mr. Navdeep Singh to take some meaningful initiatives at Canadian Government level in this regard, so that a mechanism can be planned to help economic benefits reach the grass root level for the poorest of the poor of developing countries. Dr. B. S Chandi observed that the solution to majority of the problems gripping the society in India is in the mindset that resists change and this applies to wide variety of segments of society. Meantime, Dr. B. S Chandi also visited of University of Toronto (UoT), University of Pennsylvania (UoP) and the famed Wharton Business School (WBS) and learned about new trends in Higher Education in other countries. Speaking after the visit Dr. Chandi said that he was in Canada to learn about best practices in institutions of higher education so that they could be put into practice at local Global Institutes to pursue excellence. He observed that he was deeply impressed by the work culture and the sense of social responsibility there. He added that local Institute will try to have more linkages with industry for research and development projects. “Our own research centres will be developed to help local industrial and societal needs”, he added.
