Four-Week Orientation Programme inaugurated at GNDU

Amritsar, May 19 (Punjab Post Bureau) – A “Four-Week Orientation Programme-101” was inaugurated at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre of Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 36 University and College teachers pertaining to a wide spectrum of disciplines from various nooks and corners of the country are participating in this Programme.

Prof. Subodh Kumar, Dean, Academic Affairs of the University was the Chief Guest. Prof. Kumar in his inaugural address highlighted the vital contribution of these Programmes in imparting pedagogical skills apart from enhancing the expertise of the young teaching faculty engaged in the field of higher education. Possession of sufficient knowledge in one’s discipline is imperative to be a good teacher, but to impart this knowledge to the students requires appropriate pedagogical skills, he stressed. Herein lies exactly the role of such Programmes, which have been made mandatory for the upgradation in the higher scales by the University Grants Commission, he emphasized.

Talking about the era of cut-throat competition in the present scenario, he exhorted the young faculty members to keep themselves abreast with the latest advancements in their respective field in order not to lag behind. He concluded his address by counselling the participants to make an optimum use of this opportunity to augment their knowledge, skills etc.

Prof. Kamaljit Singh, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (who joined recently), in his welcome address traced the history of establishing of then known as Academic Staff Colleges way back in 1986 in pursuit of National Policy of Education, 1986. Shedding light on the aims and objectives of these Centres, he said that to widen the horizon of the teaching faculty at large is the main motto of these Centres. Labelling the teachers as the torch bearers for the society at large, he emphasized that the education goes a long way in bringing about a transformation in the society. Therefore, the continuous enhancement of the knowledge and expertise of the teachers is the primary need of the hour, he emphasized. Besides such Programmes provide us a unique opportunity to interact with the colleagues from different linguistic, geographical, cultural, social, religious backgrounds, which is one of the major requirements of the our times. Earlier, the Chief Guest was accorded a floral welcome by Prof. Kamaljit Singh and Dr. Mohan Kumar. Dr. Mohan Kumar proposed the vote of thanks.
