GNDU organizes one day school teacher orientation workshop

Amritsar,  May 19 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University organized a one day school teacher orientation workshop on the theme “Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development with Special Emphasis on Accessibility to Person with Disability” sponsored by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh for the preparation of the upcoming Children Science Congress (CSC)-2017 (a Flagship Programme of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India). In this workshop about 50-60 teachers from five districts of Punjab viz Amritsar, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Gurdaspur and Fazilka were participating to understand the procedure of making projects on noval scientific issues.

This workshop was coordinated by Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, Associate Professor, Department of Botanical & Environmental Sciences, Who gave the introduction of Guests & resource persons. Inaugural addressed was given by Prof. (Mrs.). Satwinderjeet Kaur, Head, and Prof. (Mrs.). Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Dean of Life Sciences, was the Chief Guest of the function.

Prof. Avinash emphasized the need of inculcating scientific spirit in the school children by envolving them more in laboratory work/practicals. Dr. K.S. Bath, Principal Scientific Officer and Mr. Mandakini Thakur, Project Officer from PSCST, Chandigarh highlighted the preparation, procedure and evaluation process for the benefit of students of the participating schools. Resources person for this workshop were Dr Balwinder Singh Sooch, Dr Balkrishan, (Punjabi University, Patiala); Dr Surinder Singh, (DIET, Ropar); Mr Amarinder Singh and Mr Harpreet Singh Nagi, (BBSB Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib). They guided the teachers regarding project formulation for the children science congress which is going to be held at Fatehgarh Sahib in December 2017.

Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, who is also the state president of Vigyan Parishad Panchnad (VPP), highlighted the landmark discoveries & contributions of Indian science like discovery of Zero by Aryabhatta, decimal & other aspects of trigonometry, by Baudhyan in Mathematics, ayurvedic medicines by Charak, surgery by Sushruta, classification of Plants in Varikshayurvrda by Rishi Parasara, development of aeroplanes by Bhardwaj in Vimanshatra. Indian learning centers/universities like Takshila & Nalanda & its teachers –Chanakaya, Panini, Vishnusharma were famous worldwide. Even Albert Einstein said “We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made”.  PSCST facilitated the guests and resource persons with mementos.
