Refresher Course in English inaugurated at GNDU

Amritsar, 26 May (Punjab Post Bureau) – PPN2605201714A “Refresher Course in English” was inaugurated at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre of Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 38 University and College teachers from various nooks and corners of the country are participating.

Prof. K.S. Kahlon Registrar of the University was the Chief Guest. Prof. Kahlon in his inaugural address expressed his deep pleasure over the representation of the teachers from the diverse geographical, cultural, linguistic, religious backgrounds in the course, which, he said, speaks volumes about the growing stature of our HRDC in the entire country. Expressing his dismay over the lack of appropriate proficiency in English even amongst the graduates, he remarked that the teachers of English need to ponder over this issue and devise syllabi accordingly. In this context he highlighted the significance of the language laboratories in imparting the skills to the young learners. An expert Committee has been specifically constituted to look into this matter and to suggest possible remedies, he concluded.

The Course Coordinator, Prof. Sukhdev Singh from Deptt. of English apprised the participants about the thrust area of this Course. Keeping in view, the rapid changes taking place in English Language Teaching, the teachers of English need to update themselves personally in order to meet the expectations of the students, he stressed.

Prof. Kamaljit Singh, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, in his welcome address briefed the functions of the HRDCs, which were established across the country in pursuit of NPE, 1986. Expressing the hope that the participants would definitely get their expertise augmented during interactions with a variety of scholars during these three weeks, which he said, is the foremost aim of this Course. In addition, such platforms provide us a unique opportunity to get a brief insight into the diverse cultures, languages, socio-political backgrounds, he emphasized. Earlier Prof. K.S. Kahlon was accorded a floral welcome by Prof. Kamaljit Singh, Prof. Sukhdev Singh and Dr. Mohan Kumar. Dr. Mohan Kumar proposed the vote of thanks.
