90 lakhs Cash prizes and trophies were awarded to over 350 players
Amritsar, 29 May (Punjab Post Bureau) – At the 47th Annual Sports Prize Distribution Function for the year 2016-17 of the Guru Nanak Dev University, over 350 outstanding players who brought laurels to the University in various sports disciplines at the International, National and All India Inter-Varsity levels were honored here today with cash prizes worth Rs. 90 lakhs and trophies.
Mrs Rupa Saini, Arjuna Awardee (Hockey) was the chief guest and presented prizes to the winners. Mrs. Saini congratulated the sports personal and shared their views. She said that hardwork, dedication and commitment always help to achieve the targets in life. She advised students to work hard with dedication to achieve their goals.
Prof. Subodh Kumar, Dean Academic Affairs presided over the programme. While congratulating the winners, he said that sports is the vital part of student’s life. He said that all students should participate in sports activities alongwith their formal studies. He said that maximum efforts should be done to attract youth towards sports, so that healthy nation could be build. Prof. S.S. Behl, Dean Students’ Welfare and Prof. Narpinder Singh, Director Research were also present. Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Director Sports read out the Annual Sports Achievements Report. Dr. Gurpinder Singh Samra, President GNDU Sports Committee (Men) and Principal Lyllpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar welcomed the chief guests and others. Dr. Pushpinder Walia, President GNDU Sports Committee (Women) and Principal, BBKDAV College, Amritsar presented vote of thanks. Dr. Kanwaljit Singh, former Director and Dr. H.S. Randhawa, former Deputy Director of the Department were also honoured by the University for their contribution in the field of sports. On this occasion officials of the University and coaches were also present at this occasion.
In this function, the All India Inter-University & National winners were honored with Rs. 18000 each, second position holder got Rs 15000 and 12000 each was awarded to third position holders. The International level players (first positions) were honored with cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh each, second position holder got Rs 75000 and Rs.50000 each was awarded to third position holders, for forth positions Rs. 30000 and for participation Rs. 20000.
Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar lifted the Guru Nanak Dev University Inter-College ‘A’ Division Overall General Championship Trophy (Men) while Khalsa College, Amritsar remained runners-up. In Men category in ‘B’ Division SSM College Dina Nagar was Winner and GGS Khalsa College Sarhalai was Runners-up. In Women Section, BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar lifted the GND University Inter-College ‘A’ Division Overall General Championship Trophy while HMV Jalandhar remained runners-up. In ‘B’ Division SDSPM (W) College Rayya was Winner and RK Arya Nawan Shahr was Runners-up in women category. Shaheed Bhagat Singh Yadgari Trophy for the Year 2016-17 went to BBKDAV College for Women, Amritsar and Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar finished second. On this occasion, the principals HoDs of Physical Education and Sports personalities/coaches were also honored.
