Amritsar, May 31 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Member Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla initiated a campaign of increasing
the green cover of Amritsar for which he has joined hands with the religious institutions. Aujla conducted meetings with Baba Kashmir Singh & Baba Sukha Singh of Dera Kar Sewa Sant Baba Bhuri Wale, Baba Darshan Singh of Gurdwara Tahla Sahib, Baba Gajjan Singh (Mukhi Tarna Dal) of Gurudwara Shaheed Baba Nod Singh, Baba Jagtar Singh from Tarn Taran and district administration regarding the plantation drive. Aujla also reserved Rs.50 lakhs for this purpose from his MPLAD funds. Briefing about his ambition Aujla said that Punjab has one of the lowest area under forest cover at 5.04 per cent as compared to country’s 23.41 per cent and the best way to do plantation in Amritsar will be through large number of volunteers connected with religious organisation. He said that this drive will not only cover institutional lands, panchayat lands, mandis, hospitals, educational institutions, cremation grounds, urban and peri-urban areas and farm forestry but will also cover road sides, households etc. He further said that he has involved the experts from horticulture for the selection of plants which will grow best in Amritsar. He further added that in next step NGOs will be contacted for this cause
