Amritsar, Oct. 2 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The celebrations of Gandhi Jayanti, which falls on 2nd October were held at DAV Public School Lawrence Road here today with great zeal. The students presented a short role–play going down the memory lane when Mahatma Gandhi landed in South Africa in 1893 at the relatively tender age of 24 as a newly qualified lawyer. They highlighted the train incident in South Africa when he was thrown off the train at the objection of a white man. This incident proved to be a turning point in his life and Mahatma Gandhi decided to stay on in South Africa and fight the racial discrimination against Indians there. The school campus echoed with some of the Gandhi’s favourite hymns. The students also paid rich tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri on his jayanti which also falls on October 2. He was the second Prime Minister of India and gave the popular slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ during the Indo – Pak war of 1965. The students recited many patriotic poems paying reverence to both the great leaders. The students shared messages of harmony and brotherhood as preached by Mahatma Gandhi and proposed to follow his tenet of non – violence in their life.
Regional Officer Punjab Zone –A Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra and the Manager of the school Dr. Rajesh Kumar Principal DAV College Amritsar sent their message for the students on this occasion. They said that students must take a pledge to follow what Gandhi advocated and imbibe his simple way of life with high thinking. Principal of the school Dr. (Mrs.) Neera Sharma while addressing the students advised everyone to read about Gandhi’s life as his philosophy is more relevant in the present times. She added that world peace and social equality can be achieved by following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.
