Hospital conducts six free surgeries to mark the Day
Amritsar, July 13 (Punjab Post Bureu)- Most people think that modern medicine and surgery are a gift to the world from western countries. While many know that modern medicine has a base in Ayurveda- an ancient system of medicine using herbs and variety of concoctions, few may know that an ancient Indian physician named Sushruta compiled a monumental work in surgery and its management and is the Father of world’s modern surgery. ‘Sushruta Samhita’ a priceless compilation of detailed surgical and other intervention techniques in Sanskrit was compiled in 800 BC. To mark the “World Plastic surgery Day on July 15”Amandeep Hospital today dedicated this day to the Great Sushruta. In the presence of Dr Avtar Singh and Dr Amandeep Kaur directors of Amandeep Hospital , chief Plastic Surgeon of the hospital, Dr Ravi Mahajan stated that the first text in the study of Plastic Surgery worldover is on Sushruta Samhita which was also translated from Sanskrit into Arabic as Kitab-i- Susrud in the 8th century before many translations in other world languages thereafter.
Amandeep hospital undertook free plastic surgeries of six patients from poor backgrounds who could ill afford surgery including one of Mangoo Rani wife of Rickshaw-puller whose nose got chopped in an accident six years back and couldn’t afford surgery for nose reconstruction. Lakhwinder Kaur , a 39-year old female from Baba Bakala with diagnose of Post burn contraction of neck with Axilla ,besides Ajay from Pathankot, Bharat Bhushan, Navpreet and Jeevan Singh for various corrective surgeries. Where misconceptions range about plastic surgery are many only this being only about cosmetic surgery for beautification, the day was celebrated with live quiz on general knowledge about plastic surgery and general health consciousness with little prizes for best answers. Dr Ravi explained that plastic surgery was mainly about correction of body parts to make them functional, aesthetic and sometimes to improve postural defects. These deformities may be caused due to accidents including burns, attacks, natural disasters besides congenital (birth defect) and even post cancer when the cancerous region is amputated from the body, it needs reconstruction such as the jaw, denture etc. Besides this, the hospital distributed 500 vouchers at a popular mall of the city facilitating free consultations at the Amandeep Multi-specialty OPD clinic near Trillium Mall with validity for a month. Along with this Interestingly before being adopted by International body ‘July 15’ was announced as ‘National Plastic Surgery Day’ by Dr Raja Sabhapati president of Indian Association of Plastic Surgeons three years back wherein the national president had urged each surgeon to perform one free surgery dedicated to this day.
Dr Ravi further informed that as per historical recordthe Sushruta Samhita, in its current form, contains 184 chapters and description of 1120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants, 64 preparations from mineral sources and 57 preparations based on animal sources.
