Amritsar, January 31 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Local Government Minister, Punjab, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu today launched the ‘Cleanliness Campaign’ of the holy city from the surroundings of Sri Darbar Sahib. On the occasion, the minister was accompanied by Mayor of Amritsar Karamjit Singh Rintu, Senior Deputy Mayor Mr. Raman Bakshi, Deputy Mayor Mr. Younis Kumar, Commissioner Municipal Corporation Amritsar Mrs. Sonali Giri, Joint Commissioner Municipal Corporation Mr. Saurabh Arora, Health Officer Municipal Corporation Dr. Raju Chauhan and many councilors. On the occasion, Mr. Sidhu, Mr. Karamjit Singh Rintu, and Mrs. Sonali Giri personally cleaned the surroundings of Sri Darbar Sahib, the roads and lifted the garbage.
Afterwards, Mr. Sidhu also visited the houses of ‘Safai Karamcharis’ at Gujjarpura and listened to the grievances of the people at red quarters assuring them of addressing these. The minister instructed the concerned officials on the spot to get the clogged sewerages of the red quarters cleaned. After this, the minister visited Sri Durgiana Temple and took stock of the cleanliness arrangements.
Interacting with the mediapersons on the occasion, Mr. Sidhu said that this cleanliness campaign is a mission to make people aware regarding keeping the ‘Guru Ki Nagri’ neat & clean as we do our homes. He also said that a 5 member committee under the councilors would be constituted in every ward for ensuring clean and hygienic conditions and their contact numbers would also be displayed on the internet so as to enable the common masses to lodge their grievances. The minister further said that he would personally keep a watch on the initiative and wherever any lacunae is found the responsibility of the concerned officer would be fixed. He also divulged that the ‘Safai Sewaks’ would be provided with the masks, life jackets, uniform and gloves. The minister while interacting with the Safai Sewaks said that no safai sewak would face the axe instead more safai sewaks would be recruited in the Municipal Corporation.
On the occasion, Mayor Mr. Karamjit Singh Rintu disclosed that within a span of 1 month the 85 wards of the city would be thoroughly cleaned. He further elaborated that by the end of July, the holy city would be made Open Defecation Free. The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Mrs. Sonali Giri appealed to the people of the city to cooperate with the Municipal Corporation in keeping the city clean and green.
