Environmental & life style factors responsible for diseases – Dr. Thelma
Amritsar, Mar. 20 ( National seminar on Genes, Genetics and epigenomics was organised by Guru Nanak Dev University. This seminar was organized by department of Human Genetics and sponsored by UGC-SAP UGC-CPEPA, DST -PURSE. A large number of students and faculty were present.
Dr. Kamaljeet Singh, Dean Academic Affairs presided over while Professor Dr. B.K Thelma, Department of Genetics South Campus, Delhi University presented keynote address. Dr Gursatej Gandhi head of the department & deputy coordinator welcomed the chief guest and others. Vasudha sambyal coordinator gave introduction of the seminar and speakers. Dr Anupam Kaur of the department presented vote of thanks.
Dr. Thelma spoke about the implications of genetic variations on health and diseases. She talked about genetic disorders and briefed about the commulitative contribution of disease genes from multiple pathways. She talked about monogenetic disorders and complex disorders such as Schizophrenia, Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, Autism and mental disability. She also described the role played by environmental factors in the development of these diseases. In the end, the discussion was summed up with the aim to identify the pathways affected and then move on to drug treatment modalities.
Prof. Kamaljit Singh in his presential remarks appreciated initiatives of the department. He said that more financial assistance would be provided by the University to organise this type of seminars. He also gave details about the achievements and activities of the University. Dr. Thelma was honored on this occasion.
