Amritsar/ Geneva, Oct. 30 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla today addressed the 
General Assembly of Global Urban Air Pollution Observatory (GUAPO) during World Health Organisation’s (WHO) First Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health being held at Geneva, Switzerland from 30th Oct. to 1st Nov. Aujla is representing Amritsar AirQualityAsia India Group Member.
Aujla informed that Paris, The Hague, Abidjan, Besancon, London, Madrid, New York, Tokyo and Seoul are the member cities of GUAPO and Beirut, Sofia, Ulaanbaatar and Valencia are the candidate cities. Aujla is presenting the air pollution scenario of Amritsar as Amritsar is among 21 most polluted cities which get a chance to be added as a member city. He informed that as per WHO 11 of the top 12 most polluted cities are located in India, and it becomes imperative for the city to be part of this initiative of WHO. Aujla further informed that if Amritsar is selected as the member city of GUPAO, a team of WHO shall survey the city and design a plan of action to count the increasing air pollution. State and Union governments shall be part of the WHO’s strategy and all the budget and grant in aid shall be sanctioned and sponsored by WHO and World Bank.
Aujla during his addressed informed the GUPAO leaders about the measures taken by Union government, National Green Tribunal (NGT) and stage government to control the ever increasing air pollution due to diesel based obsolete public transport system, ineffective solid waste management with special mention of Bhagtanwala dump, straw burning by farmers, industries without treatment plants, open sewerage, open defecation and lack of education and information required to aware people.
Aujla said that he considers representing the holy city at such a level as God’s gift as it happens to be his birthday and he is very sure that Amritsar shall get the membership of GUPAO which could transform the future of the city and the residents.
