Aurangzeb wanted to end Ninth Guru’s life in 1665

Amritsar, September 20 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The decision to execute Guru Tegh Bahadur ji in November 1675 was not taken on the spur of moment. In fact, Aurangzeb had expressed his desire to end Guru’s life in October- November 1665, within a year of Gurta Gaddi. Alam Khan Rohela, Mughal official had arrested him from Dhamtan, Tehsil Narwana of Distt.Jind in Haryana. Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, Bhai Dyal Das,Bhai Dago of Dhamtan, Bhai Sangta were also arrested. Aurangzeb ordered his execution but better sense prevailed after Kanwar Ram Singh Kushwaha intervened. Guru was kept in his custody for two months.

            Dr. Amanpreet Singh Gill from SGTB Khalsa College, Delhi discussed this little known and much ignored fact described in Sarup Singh Kaushish’s Guru Kian Sakhian(1790), while delivering third online lecture ‘The Glorious Life of Ninth Guru and Historian’s Unfinished Assignment’ in International History Lecture Series at Guru Nanak Dev University, ASR on September 19. Centre on Studies in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Department of History are organizing this lecture series dedicated to the 400th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.Dr.Gill stressed upon the need for preparing scientific timeline of Sikh history. He suggested that artificial intelligence application must be developed for automatic conversion of traditional calendar dates which pose a great challenge before the task of historian.

            While throwing new light on the history of Baba Bakala, Dr.Amanpreet elaborated upon the politics of translation and cautioned that one must handle the language of historical sources with great care.
