Amritsar, July 7 (Punjab Post Bureau) – In a rare gesture of animal care of treatment the veterinary doctors of Khalsa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (KCVAS) saved the lives of three camels injured in a road accident near Tarn Taran. They undertook a midnight operation on the camels who had sustained serious injuries during the accident when the vehicles in which they were being ferried met with an accident.
The accident happened on July 2 when the truck carrying four camels met head on collision with another truck on Amritsar-Bathinda highway. The vehicle owners ferrying the camels to Rajasthan ran away. One camel died on the spot while the three others were badly injured with multiple fractures as their legs had been severely crushed.
“It was a horrific scene as the animals were crying in pain”, said Dr. Jobandeep Singh, Veterinary Surgeon who headed the team that operated upon the animals at KCVAS. He said he got the call from Dr. Rohan Mehra Chairman, Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Amritsar late in the evening, describing the incident.
“As we discussed the camels were loaded on the truck and brought to the KCVAS Veterinary Hospital at village Mahal on the outskirts and it took us four hours to operate and complete the treatment. The camels are responding to the crime and are kept under medical supervision at SPCA”, said Dr. Jobandeep adding that Dr. Rohan had first approached the office of Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry, Tarn Taran who advised them to take them to KCVAS.
KCVAS Principal Dr. P.K Kapoor said the limbs of the animals were badly fractured and it was not possible to treat them at Tarn Taran, hence they referred them to KCVAS Amritsar. After administering analgesics to all of them, our doctors team started performing the physical operations and treatment”, said he adding that Dr. Anyam V. Kishore was another team member of the doctors who tended upon the animals.
