
Jalandhar, June 23 (Punjab Post Bureau)- A mega Yoga Camp was organised to commemorate the Second International Yoga Day on 21 Jun 2016 at Katoch Stadium for all ranks stationed at Jalandhar Garrison under the aegis of Vajra Corps. Yogasanas (postures) and ‘Pranayam’ were practiced in symphony as per the Common Yoga Protocol laid down by the Ministry of AYUSH. As many as 6976 Army personnel to comprise Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers, Jawans and their families, as well as children of Army School and Kendriya Vidyalaya participated in the event with huge fervor and gusto.
Vajra Corps earlier undertook a special drive to train a core group of 100 Yoga instructors for two weeks to further train the soldiers and their families of the entire Jalandhar Cantonment. The objective of the Yoga session organized by Vajra Corps was to provide an insight into the traditional basis of Yoga and its relevance in the present day context of high stress and demanding military service.
Lieutenant General JS Cheema, General Officer Commanding, Vajra Corps speaking on the occasion said, “Yoga, emphasizes flexibility, enhancing the mental agility, physical stamina and steadfastness of soldiers, Yoga, therefore, fits perfectly with the military’s emphasis on mental robustness and physical agility, to hone the overall personality of soldiers. Yoga uses meditation, deep relaxation, gentle stretching and breathing exercises to reduce physical, emotional and mental tension and stress levels of a soldier and, therefore, is useful in helping people to deal with anxiety caused by traumatic events faced by the soldiers in combat”.
The 45 minutes session included a set of loosening exercises followed by yogasana and pranayama under guidance of specialist yoga Instructors Colonel Maheshwara, Capt Sajin James and Capt Honey Haridas. The event was concluded with a set of Pranayamas and Meditation techniques. With soothing music in the background the entire stadium meditated in silence, finally drawing the event to a close. The spectacular event ended with the complete gathering taking a solemn pledge “To evolve into healthy, peaceful, joyful and loving human beings”.
The special historic Yoga Shivir was also attended by Major General Deepak Dhanda, Chief of Staff, Vajra Corps, Major General Sanjiv Bajaj, General Officer Commanding, Jalandhar Sub Area and other senior dignitaries.
