
Amritsar, Aug. 23 (Punjab Post Burea) – Punjab Revenue and Information& Public Relation Minister Mr. Bikram Singh Majithia met Union Finance Minister Mr. Arun Jaitely at his Residence in Amritsar, Regarding the renovation, rehabilitation and modernization of Uppar Bari Doab Canal. Mr. Majithia submitted a memorandum regarding this to the Finance Minister demanding the release of special grant of Rs 1386.79 crore for this project which irrigates 13.43 lac acre land but due to deteriorating condition of the canal its irrigation is reduced to iust 63 percent.
Mr. Majithia apprised the Union Finance Minister that the farmers of the districts of Patahankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran would benefit a lot from this canal Water if Upper Bari doab Canal is repaired. He said that Punjab Government had already sent a proposal for rehabilitation, renovation and modernization regarding this to the Union Ministry of Finace and Water Resources in August, 2015. He told the Union Finance Minister that Central water commission had already done the technical appraisal of the project and the case will be put up in the next technical appraisal committee of Ministry of the water resources.
He told Mr. Arun Jaitely that Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal was to personally meet him on the issue but due to some reasons Chief Minister was not unable to come and sent him to represent the case of Uppar Bari Doab Canal.
Mr. Majithia said that this 400 kilometre long canal is one of the oldest canal in the country built by the British in the year 1889 have seven main brances and 247 distributaries. He further said that as everyone is aware of the depleting ground water fact therefore this canal would be a great help for farmers of Majha region for irrigation.
Mr. Majitha said that the Union Finance Minister has assured thiscase will be discussed at the earliest and soon positive outcome will come.
