National Seminar on ‘Human Rights  & Duties’ organized at GNDU

Amritsar, March 7 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Department of Political Science of Guru Nanak Dev University organized Two-Day   UGC-Sponsored National Seminar on ‘Human Rights  and Duties’.  The seminar includes 25 papers spanning over 5 technical sessions. Prof. Jagrup Singh Sekhon Director of Seminar and Head, Department of Political Science welcomed the guests in the inaugural session and introduced the theme of the seminar. Prof. Bharat H. Desai from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi presented the key-note address and he covered the concept of human rights very comprehensively touching normative as well as empirical issues around the world as well as India. Prof. T.S Benipal Director Research of the University graced the occasion as  the guest of honour.  Prof. Kuldip Singh from Department of Political Science of the University presented vote of thanks. First technical session incorporated 6 papers on various themes. Dr. Mujbir-ur Rehman shared views on perspective of Muslim rights including historical and contemporary and deliberated the recent issues about Muslims. Prof. A.S. Narang on his paper spoke about evolution of human rights from liberal to individualistic and class approach using world wars. He touched the aspects of minority rights in India in terms of religious, cultural and gender perspectives.  About the plight of human rights of industrial workers, Prof. A.S. Sidhu mentioned in his papers that Indian government has failed to sign International Conventions regarding industrial workers’ rights. Prof. Parminder Singh discussed in his paper about human rights from the colonial, communal and nationalism point of view. Prof. Rattan Singh of Punjab University, Chandigarh brought to fore the violation of human rights of Dalits in his paper alongwith highlighting the various international covenants. In the last paper of the technical session of the seminar, Dr. Balraj Kaur Sidhu threw light on women’s rights in conflict zones.

The seminar was well-attended by academicians from various disciplines, human right activists, research scholars and students of various departments of the university as well as nearby and faraway colleges and universities.
