University organized national seminar on Music & Yoga as Alternative Therapies

Amritsar, March 21 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Music Department of Guru Nanak Dev University organized national seminar on Music and Yoga as Alternative Therapies in Guru Nanak Bhawan Auditorium of the University. Prof. S.S. Gill, former Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot presided over and Prof. Keshav Sharma, Eminent & Educationist Music & Yoga Therapist presented key note address. Prof. N.S. Tung, Dean Academic Affairs was the special guest on this occasion.PPN2103201727 Vidushai Prof. Dr. Uma Garg, AIR top Grade Vocalist and Pt. Prateek Chaudhuri, AIR top Grade Sitarist were guest of honor. Seminar Director, Prof. Gurpreet Kaur, Head of Music Department welcomed the guests and gave the details about the activities about the department. Semianr Convener, Dr. Tejinder Gulati presented vote of thanks and Seminar Co-convener, Dr. Rajesh Sharma gave the details about the seminar.

Prof. Gill said that controlled treatment outcome studies that listening to and playing music is a patent treatment of mental health issues. He said that research demonstrates that adding music therapy to treatment improves symptoms and social functioning among schizophrenics. Further, music therapy has demonstrated efficacy as an independent treatment for reducing depression, anxiety and chronic pain, he added. Dr. Sharma in his keynote address said that music and yoga both are consider as part of alternative medicine. He said that individually, the two possess extraordinary healing powers. It stands to reason then, that combining music and yoga together can create limitless possibilities of healing, transformation and peace.
