Refresher Course in English” concluded at Guru Nanak Dev University

Amritsar, June 16 (Punjab Post Bureau) – A “Three-Week Refresher Course in English” concluded on June 15, 2017 at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, GNDU. As many as 38 university and college teachers pertaining to faculty of English Language and Literature from various nooks and corners of the country participated in the Course.

Prof. Subodh Kumar, Dean Academic Affairs was the Chief Guest. Prof. Kumar in his valedictory address said that undoubtedly, English is fast emerging as the lingua franca of the world. Expressing his deep concern over the declining standard of English amongst the younger generation of today, he exhorted the teaching fraternity to ponder over this issue and to take appropriate measures to improve the quality. Even the pass-outs from the Universities and Colleges with the high academic degrees are not proficient in this language, he rued. The proliferation of the private English Teaching Centres in the country testifies that something is definitely wrong with our syllabi, pedagogical skills, curricula etc., he added. All these lacunae need to be plugged in order to improve the proficiency of the young graduates in English on war footing, he stressed. He concluded his address by affirming that proficiency in English is a must not only for the teachers of English, but also for the other sections of the society particularly, for the teaching community pertaining to other disciplines.

Prof. Sukhdev Singh Deptt. of English, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and the Coordinator briefly summarized the contents of the Course. Expressing his deep anguish over the shrinking faculty of languages, particularly of English, he emphasized on the recruitment of optimum number of quality teachers to raise the quality of English teaching.

Prof. Kamaljit Singh, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre felicitated the participants on the successful completion of the course and hoped that their aspirations must have been definitely met during the Course. Asking them to incorporate the expertise gained during the course in their classroom teaching, he said that only then the real motive of such courses could be achieved. The participants of the Course expressed their deep gratitude to the organizers for this venture, which, they described as one of their best academic experiences so far. They also made some constructive suggestions. Earlier the Chief Guest was accorded a floral welcome by Prof. Kamaljit Singh, Prof. Sukhdev Singh and Dr. Mohan Kumar. In the end, certificates were given away to the successful participants. Dr. Mohan Kumar proposed the vote of thanks.
