Khalsa Hockey Academy Players Get IOC Scholarships

Amritsar, July 21 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Seven hockey women players from Khalsa Hockey Academy PUNJ2107201913(KHA) under the aegis of Khalsa College Charitable Society (KCCS) have been selected by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) for scholarships of Rs. 79, 0000 each annually. The female players were selected following the rigorous selection process scrutinizing their national and international level contributions to the game of Hockey in the past years.

            KCGC Honorary Secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina who felicitated the players at the campus here today hailed the performance of the players at the national level. The players selected, he said included Reet, Navpreet Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Neha, Simran Chopra, Kajal and Simran. Reet has already been honoured with financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 80 lakhs by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana government recently.

            Sports Director of the Academy Dr. Kanwaljit Singh said the financial assistance would help the budding players in their further training and personal spending as the Academy is funding the entire cost of boarding and lodging apart from their education at Khalsa College. “They are getting trained under the Draunacharaya awardee coach Baldev Singh and assistant coach Amarjit Singh”, said Khalsa University VC Dr. Gurmohan Singh Walia.

            At least four players from the Academy are part of the national hockey team and are under training at the national camps. “Most of these players are eyeing the 2020 Olympic Games”, said Dr. Walia adding that the performance of the girls during Nehru Cup (Delhi), Youth Olympics (Netherlands), U-18 Asian Games (Thailand), U-13 Six Nations Tournament Belgium, Spain, Test matches in Australia and Khelo India Games had been outstanding in the recent past.
