Amritsar, Mar. 16 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Department of Zoology, BBK DAV College for Women organized “Two Days Hands-on Training in Histopathological Techniques” sponsored by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. Four Faculty members from the Department of Zoology namely Dr. Monika Bhardwaj, Ms. Prabhjot Kaur, Ms. Isha Babbar & Ms. Ashima Mehra, along with forty students from B.Sc. (Med) Semester-VI and B.Sc. (Biotechnology) Semester-IV were imparted training in histopathology at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research on March 13-14, 2015.

Dr. Mridu Manjari, Professor and Head, Department of Pathology and Dr. Manas Madan, Associate Professor, Department of Pathology at SGRD institute of Medical Science and Research were the resource persons for this event. The workshop was preceeded by a lecture, delivered by Dr. Manas, pertaining to the steps in processing, embedding, section cutting and staining of the tissues. The faculty and the students were apprised of the automation in Histopathology. The students made the blocks and practised section cutting on a microtome. They also learnt the procedure for double staining and mounting of the tissues.

It is pertinent to mention here that University Grants Commission (UGC) has banned the dissections of animals vide Wildlife Protection Act (1972). However the practical syllabi of B.Sc (Med.) Sem VI and B.Sc (BT) Sem IV includes Microtomy. This Hands-on Training basically aimed at developing actual understanding of the histopathological techniques amongst the faculty and the students so that mere rote learning is discouraged. This training was very fruitful for the staff & the students as it facilitated the imbibition of subject matter in a proper way.

Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra motivated the faculty and the students to organize more of such kind of trainings for the strengthening of life sciences at undergraduate level.
