Amritsar, Mar 4 (Punjab Post Bureau) – General Dalbir Singh, Chief of the Army Staff shall be visiting Amritsar on 07 March 2016. The Chief of the Army Staff on behalf of the HON’BLE PRESIDENT OF INDIA will present the ‘Standard’ to 18 Cavalry, a frontline Armoured Regiment of the Indian Army, presently operating along the western borders. A mounted parade with tanks will be one of the significant events of this historic occasion at Amritsar Military Station.
The blood line of the 18th Cavalry is traceable to the year 1842, and to two outstanding Cavalry Regiments which were initially raised as ‘Irregular Cavalry’ Regiments of Bengal Presidency Army – 6th King Edward’s Own Cavalry and 7th Hariana Lancers and in 1922, were amalgamated to form the 18th King Edwards Own Cavalry. The Regiment epitomes the virtues of character, courage and valour. It has imbibed the core military values of honour, selflessness and sacrifice. The Regiment has also participated in a large number of operations including Indo Pak War 1965 and 1971, Operation Vijay, Operation Parakram and Operation Rakshak. In it’s current location apart from focusing on operational readiness, it has been working towards the welfare of ex- servicemen, veer naris, war widows and spreading awareness about the strength of the Indian Army among the civil populace of the region. The Regiment has achieved a distinguished record of being awarded 29 Battle Hounours, second highest in Indian Armoured Corps.
For it’s over about 174 years of meritorious and distinguished service to the Nation, the Regiment will be bestowed with the President’s ‘Standard’ by the Chief of the Army Staff. The function is scheduled to be conducted on 07 March 2016 at Amritsar Military Station. The event will be witnessed by a host of military and civil dignitaries alongwith many school children and civil populace. To commemorate this historic event, the Chief of the Army Staff will release a “Special Day Cover” on behalf of the Regiment.
