Ajnala, 12 June (Punjab Post Bureau) – Under worker’s contact program of DCC Amritsar Rural congressmen visited the area of Bal Labe Dariya near village Chaarpur. The residents and farmers showed the havocs wrecked by river Ravi on its banks between pillar 4000 and pillar 5000. Farmers informed DCC(R) chief Gurjeet Singh Aujla that the process of installing spurs on the weak banks of river hasn’t been recommended by the river survey visiting team reporting to the authorities that the river water is at 10ft and no measures are required between 4000 and 5000.

Farmers informed Aujla about the irrigation mafia due to which farmers suffer every rainy season. It was also learnt that in 1978 government approved earthen dam to be built near village Dujowal but the work was stopped. Villagers informed that if the work at Dujowal barrage is completed then the entire flow of Ravi can be routed towards Pakistan and Indian lands could be saved from floods. However due to the survey teams being hand in glove with the contractor mafia and sand mafia, the farmers suffer every year and the contractors earn millions.

Villagers and farmers said that CM Badal never paid any heed towards their plights, they even reported the entire scene during Sangat Darshans. Aujla commenting on the situation said that whenever the water level rises the farmers become the only sufferers. Reminding about the sand mafia; Aujla said that due to illegal mining in Ravi, the Indian side of the river is 5ft deeper than the river bed in Pakistan which poses another threat to the farmers and the riverbank. He informed that whenever flow of water is restricted from the Madhopur dam the water from Pakistan floods back into India causing  more damage to the river banks. He also informed that due to this reverse water flow the spur building process going on between pillar 1000 and 2000 will be useless until and unless done on the entire length of damaged banks to avoid the troubles related to monsoon
